School Safety Self-Assessment Survey
Monitor progress in national school safety
Purpose
The School Safety Self-Assessment Survey introduces a paradigm shift when it comes to the collection of school-level data. This enables rapid access and use of the data for planning and decision-making at school, sub-national and national levels. It does this in several ways:
i. It pushes this non-technical data collection down to the school level and does not require site visits from external experts. Part of the way that it achieves this is with some visual prompts for disambiguation of data. For example, on questions about latrine types, there are small illustrations so that respondents don’t need to guess the right name of the type of latrines that they have.
ii. Rather than being an extractive process, the data itself is designed to inform planning and decision-making at school level, subnational level, and national level. The availability of automated school reports with ratings, rankings and recommendations for the school, and with links to guidance materials creates an important incentive for schools to provide accurate and actionable data. We expect this to improve the quality of school data inputs into national education management information systems.
iii. Aggregated reports, selected for specific geographies and time frames, are also available at the national and sub-national levels to facilitate planning.
iv. The data enables rapid prioritization of schools needing technical inspection. It does this through the use of algorithms to analyze the responses, AND with the ability of remote review of supporting photographic data by technical experts.
School Safety Self-Assessment Survey is aligned with the CSS Targets and indicators, and is conducted by the head of the school, the school safety DRR focal point, or, ideally the school management committee with participatory inputs of students.
